Packing list for a hike
Keep in mind that the weather can change quickly in the mountains, even if it's sunny in the city, so be prepared for both sun and rain. If it rains or gets foggy, it can still be a cool experience to hike through the forests and along the levadas, as long as there's no lightning. The bonus of bad weather is that you'll likely have the trail to yourself, and the deeper you go into the valleys, the better the weather tends to get.
Clothing:
- T-shirts
- Jacket: A light, waterproof jacket for rain and wind.
- Sweater: Consider bringing a fleece or thermal wear—temperatures can be cooler in the mountains, especially if it's cloudy.
- Pants: Comfortable hiking pants/tights that can handle various weather conditions.
- Hat or cap: Protects against both sun and rain.
- Sunglasses
Footwear:
- Hiking shoes: Sneakers work, but they'll get muddy.
- Extra socks: Bring a few extra pairs in case your feet get wet.
Gear:
- Backpack: A light one to carry your gear.
- Water bottle
- Map: Most hikes are well-marked, but it's always a good idea to download maps on your phone beforehand.
Miscellaneous:
- Sunscreen
- First aid kit
- Camera or phone: To capture those stunning views!
- Flashlight/headlamp: On some levada hikes, you may walk through long tunnels with no lighting. If your phone doesn't have a flashlight, consider bringing a headlamp for those walks!
